Payload vs Towing Capacity
Ads quote max towing capacity. Your camper is usually limited by payload.
Two different limits
- Towing capacity: the max trailer weight the truck can pull, usually computed for a lightly equipped truck with just a 150 lb driver.
- Payload: how much weight the truck itself can carry: people, cargo, the hitch and the trailer's tongue or pin weight.
Example (illustrative numbers)
A truck rated to tow 11,000 lb with 1,500 lb payload pulls an 8,000 lb trailer. Tongue at 12% = 960 lb, plus a 100 lb WD hitch, plus 400 lb of people and 150 lb of gear = 1,610 lb. That's over payload, even though the trailer is well under the tow rating.

Safety note: These are planning estimates, not a guarantee your setup is safe or legal. Always verify with your truck's door-jamb sticker, the manufacturer's towing guide for your exact configuration, the trailer's VIN sticker, and a real weigh at a CAT scale. Never exceed any rating.
